Where if not here, when if not now (Kintsugi Heart v.1)

Ink, Acrylic, on Wood Panel

Private Collection

This small piece started as a work inspired by the Japanese method of joining and fixing broken ceramic pieces with gold called Kintsugi. It’s a metaphoric act that doesn’t hide the shattered history of the object but seeks to highlight and beautify the scars and the cracks, seeks to recognize that broken fact while making it whole again. It’s hard to respond to everything that is going on in this time, in the world. There is so much that is broken, from the pandemic and the loss of life to the suffering on the streets and the rampant injustice. I always want to seek a way to say something truly thoughtful in my work, something that doesn’t just add to the noise and the rabble, something that comes from a place of love, a place I try to make all my work from. I feel like I see so many broken hearts, mine included, and my immediate response, the one I come back to time and time again, is to want to mend those hearts, fit the pieces back together, make them whole and full again. This piece was made specifically for a group show with Thinkspace Projects called MOTHER EARTH: WE ARE ALL ONE
